Review of Animal Welfare Act



The Northern Territory Animal Welfare Act was introduced on 27 March 2000.

The Northern Territory Government is currently reviewing the Act to ensure that it continues to effectively provide for the welfare of animals and prevention of cruelty.

The review will deal with matters related to the Act and will particularly focus on:

  • the adequacy of enforcement provisions and penalties available,
  • consideration of the value of changes made in similar legislation in other jurisdictions; and
  • the adequacy of the Act to deal with incidences of animal cruelty.

A discussion paper (pdf 44Kb) is now available for comment.
